LES RAMBLAS IN CHESTER

30th August 2009

Chester city centre was transformed over the Bank Holiday weekend as over 40 artist and community groups showcased their work for the final instalment of Roam the Rows.

The weekend also saw the premiere of STIR, a specially commissioned dance piece for Roam the Rows, Chester Perfprms' free community street arts event.

Over 30 community and professional dancers positioned themselves along Watergate Street and Rows, and intermingled with shoppers and event attendees mimicking the motion of water. The piece is inspired by how the River Dee once flowed to the edge of Watergate Street and was integral to the major port’s activities.

Amber Knipe, Programme Manager, Chester Performs said ‘This year’s Roam the Rows offered a diverse programme for festival attenders, we aimed to have a broad variety of events, that could include those staged by retailers. It was wonderful to see people returning for more than one weekend, and the footfall of Watergate Street up by so much.’

Roam the Rows was a FREE event; Chester Performs has worked with a variety of professional artists, community groups, businesses, retailers and partners to deliver the programme. The arts organisation enjoyed recent success with Chester’s film and digital media festival, Screen Deva which took place in May. They also present a regular programme of contemporary performance of film, SOAPBOX, which showcases work in spaces not normally used for performance or cinema.
